Livestock Reservoir Hosts: An Obscured Threat to Control of Human Schistosomiasis in Nigeria

چکیده
Schistosomiasis is one of the leading neglected tropical diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Recorded case numbers this chronic and debilitating helminth disease indicate Nigeria to be most endemic country within region. National control efforts have focused intensively on restricting human contact with freshwater sources intermediate host snails. However, limited attention has been paid role livestock as reservoir hosts prevalence transmission schistosomes humans via farmed animals. The West African nations Mali, Senegal, neighbouring Niger, Benin, Cameroon all reported hybridization closely related species Schistosoma haematobium, which infects humans, S. bovis, cattle. As these countries share Niger Benue rivers, their tributaries, there a distinct possibility aquatic snails infected hybrid migrating become established Nigerian river system. Here, we report current state research that aims elucidate key aspects zoonotic schistosomiasis epidemiology. Factors promoting are highlighted, how available measures can optimized address emergence schistosome hybrids discussed.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease and ubiquitous in the world. Infection rate in the tropical and subtropical regions with high humidity is higher than other areas. The rate is lower in dry regions whether hot or cold. More than 200 species of warmblooded animals are intermediate hosts and cats or members of the carnivore family Felidae have been found to be definitive hosts.' In Iran in...
متن کاملA schistosomiasis model with an age-structure in human hosts and its application to treatment strategies.
We study a system of partial differential equations which models the disease transmission dynamics of schistosomiasis. The model incorporates both the definitive human hosts and the intermediate snail hosts. The human hosts have an age-dependent infection rate and the snail hosts have an infection-age-dependent cercaria releasing rate. The parasite reproduction number R is computed and is shown...
متن کاملUrinary schistosomiasis in preschool children in settlements around Oyan Reservoir in Ogun State, Nigeria: implications for control.
We determined the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in preschool children below the age of 5 years in three settlements around Oyan Reservoir in Ogun State, Nigeria. Of 209 children screened, 150 (71.8%) had an infection, with no significant difference between males and females; 42.9% of infants were infected. Both prevalence and intensity of infection increased significantly with age (P < ...
متن کاملAn alternative to killing? Treatment of reservoir hosts to control a vector and pathogen in a susceptible species.
Parasite-mediated apparent competition occurs when one species affects another through the action of a shared parasite. One way of controlling the parasite in the more susceptible host is to manage the reservoir host. Culling can cause issues in terms of ethics and biodiversity impacts, therefore we ask: can treating, as compared to culling, a wildlife host protect a target species from the sha...
